Dr Buchanan is a graduate of Monash University and trained in anaesthesia at the Alfred and Geelong Hospital training programmes. His usual area of practice is in general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, plastics and orthopaedic surgery.
He has a special interest in regional anaesthesia, especially ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia, and in evidence-based anaesthetic research. He is actively involved in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
He is a member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, International Anesthesia Research Society and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia.
